Coaching Assignment: GAME OVER!

Pain VS Suffering.

Are you in Pain or are you Suffering?  What’s the difference, you ask?  Well I say there is a BIG difference!  Pain I understand, Suffering I don’t.

Don’t get me wrong, I am by no means a proponent of pain, but I do believe there is some wisdom in the saying “No pain, No gain.”

Growing up in a strict catholic home “suffering” was always touted as a virtue especially since Jesus went through all that trouble and got himself crucified for us!  Even as a small child I wasn’t really sure about Jesus and his “suffering”.

If your feathers are getting ruffled, indulge me for a moment and read on:

I recently received an e-mail from Mort Fertel with this story in it.

There once was a man who was sentenced to 25 years of backbreaking labor. His wrists were tied to the handle of a huge wheel that was inlaid in the wall. His job was to turn the wheel 10 hours a day.

For years, day in and day out, the prisoner would wonder what he was doing with this wheel. What was the meaning of his work? What was on the other side of this wall? Was he grinding grain? Pulling up water? Moving some sort of conveyer belt?

For 25 years he contemplated the meaning of his work, and for 25 years he spun that wheel. It was grueling, but he survived.

When his sentence was complete he was released from prison. The first thing he did was run to the other side of the wall to see what he had been doing all this time.

What did he see?

Nothing!

There was nothing attached to the wheel. For 25 years, 10 hours a day, he was spinning a wheel
for absolutely no purpose. When the man realized his true sentence, he collapsed and died.

The prisoner was able to survive 25 years of backbreaking labor, but when he realized that it
was all for nothing, he couldn't survive for another moment.

Pain has a purpose.

Suffering is true torture because it has no meaning.

Pain is bearable. Suffering for no reason is devastating

I believe that if Jesus knew that his pain had a purpose, somehow he knew something wonderful would come of it. Jesus was a smart man, had he not known, he would have said “game over” and gone home.  Jesus knew that his pain was for something wonderful.  Are you in Pain or are you Suffering?

If you are in a painful situation right now, what is its purpose?  What is the BIG picture?  What are you hoping to attain?  If you can answer these questions and be satisfied with your answers, know that you are on a path, and that you will be successful

If you are suffering for no reason, if there is no purpose, if you believe you are simply being tortured for no reason, why continue?  Could it be time for you to say “GAME OVER!”, and walk away?

Burdens and Laughter

What is your current state of mind?  If you find yourself worried, depressed, scared, upset, or in any other unhappy state consider this.  Take a break.

Imagine your problem as a glass of wine in your right hand and you are holding it up to give a toast.

How much does it weight, 8oz 10oz, 12oz?

"The absolute weight doesn't matter.  It depends on how long you try to hold it.

If you hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.
If you hold it for an hour, you'll have an ache in your right arm.
If you hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.
In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer you hold it,
the heavier it becomes."

<FONTCOLOR=#6600CC size="4">No matter what your burden put it aside for a short period.  Take a break from it and find something to laugh about.  It will be there when you come back and you will return refreshed and with a mind that is clearer.  You will be better able to address whatever it is.

Here is some help in the laughter department:

Deep thoughts for those who take life too seriously:

2. On the other hand...you have different fingers

5. Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

6. The early bird may get the worm but the second
mouse gets the cheese in the trap.

.7. A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad
memory.

8. Change is inevitable, except from vending
machines.

9. If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple of

10. How many of you believe in psycho-kinesis? Raise
my hand.

11. When everything is coming your way, you're in the
wrong lane.

12. Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays
off now.

13. Every one has a photographic memory. Some just
don't have film.

14. How much deeper would the ocean be without
sponges?

Which definition most accurately describes what you want your life to be like?  If your life isn’t currently a reflection of that definition, what would it be like if it were?  Find a pen and some paper and write about what your dream life would be like.  Include details such as what people would you be with, where would you live, what kind of job would you have, what would you be doing for leisure?  Most importantly, if you had this life, what would it FEEL like?

You'll Try?

On Friday night my 19 year old son had a few friends over.  When I woke Saturday morning I found three boys sleeping in my den.  The boys were eating breakfast when my 12 year old daughter came to me and asked “Can I take a shower"

I answered “yes, but you only have ten minutes so you have to be fast”

“I’ll try” she replied.

“There is no trying there is only doing” I stated.

From the breakfast table of boys I heard “I like that!  It sounds like something from a movie.”

The other boys chimed in and agreed.  They started throwing movie titles around that they thought the line would fit in; Karate Kid and Rocky were the top favorites.

I smiled and said “No, it’s a personal quote used when there is no room for anything but action."

Is there something you are “trying” to do that you really should be doing?

(By the way, the shower only took ten minutes!)
