A Bit Of Inspiration

This is one of the songs and videos I watch and listen to when I need a shot of strength and courage.

GARTH BROOKS LYRICS

"Standing Outside The Fire"

We call them cool
Those hearts that have no scars to show
The ones that never do let go
And risk the tables being turned

We call them fools
Who have to dance within the flame
Who chance the sorrow and the shame
That always comes with getting burned

But you've got to be tough when consumed by desire
'Cause it's not enough just to stand outside the fire

We call them strong
Those who can face this world alone
Who seem to get by on their own
Those who will never take the fall

We call them weak
Who are unable to resist
The slightest chance love might exist
And for that forsake it all

They're so hell-bent on giving ,walking a wire
Convinced it's not living if you stand outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire

There's this love that is burning
Deep in my soul
Constantly yearning to get out of control
Wanting to fly higher and higher
I can't abide
Standing outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire

Standing outside the fire
Standing outside the fire
Life is not tried, it is merely survived
If you're standing outside the fire

I'm Back!

I am back from vacation and boy did I play hard!  I have a lot of catching up to do so I will be waiting till Monday to turn my alerts back on.

The first part of my vacation was a working vacation, but as soon as my daughter was confirmed my body went from being a temple to being an amusement park!

Thursday we spent running all over Long Island looking for Motorcycles.  I have always wanted to ride and with gas going through the roof I now had the perfect excuse.  I have to get my permit and take a class, but this is the bike I picked out and will be getting very shortly. I can hardly wait.
The soon to be mine.... Honda Rebel!

Friday I was picked up by the Suffolk County Police Department and driven to the Police Academy.  This was Guinea Pig day and I was the pig!  I had to get drunk so the recruits could test us.  I won! LOL if there is such a thing.  I was the most drunk, but the recruits thought I was the least drunk.  (A sloppy drunk I am not! )

On Saturday I drove down to Philadelphia to attend my Grand Nieces Birthday party.  I strapped on my old skates and had a blast.  Unfortunately no one got any pictures of me on  skates, but my daughter was impressed (which is hard to do!)   Back in the day I used to be a skate guard.  ( that was another job I forgot to mention on the MeMe)

Emily

Mackenzie the Birthday Girl!

Emerson,  Kathi,  Brendan

On Sunday... I went over the my friends Sally and Fred.  Sally showed Debbie and I how to make sausage bread.  It was the perfect end to a wonderful vacation.

Me holding the sausage bread we made Sally & Debbie

A lot happed in one week.  I have a lot of catching up to do, but it was a wonderful week.

Checking In!

It's Thursday,  so it is Magic Smoke Day.  Check out the Challenge over there!

Vacation is going nice.  My daughter was confirmed yesterday.  Here is a picture of her, Fr. John (a long time family friend) and myself.

Yeah, I know!

Ok, I know I am SUPPOSED to be on vacation.  But I couldn't resist sharing this with all of you.  Now apparently the Germans are having a problem with this new swim suit.

The odd thing is that the problem that the Germans are having with the suit are not for the OBVIOUS reason.

The picture below was taken from one of the main AOL sports pages to show the new Speedo's design.

Olympic medalists sport the new Speedo "LZR Racer" swimsuits

Does anyone else see the design flaw?

Now I can understand why their might be obvious reasons why some folks might take offense to such a swim suit.  The Germans say that the swimsuit gives a swimmer unfair advantage over other swimmers.  I say it has NOTHING to do with the swimsuit!  Unfair advantage or otherwise!

Here is the link in case you are interested in the story: Could Speedos cause disaster?

somewhere

somehwere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

Keep it going!

Just a quick post today...

Yesterday's exercise was to write down what your Gremlin is saying to you.  Keep this going.  It is a two day exercise.  It will help you to see just how insidious this little Damon is.

Tomorrow:  I will be unveiling a NEW CHALLENGE at Magic Smoke.  I'm looking forward to it and I hope that it inspires you to follow your dreams.

Also,  Starting today I am officially on Vacation till Tuesday April 29.  I have turned off my alerts till then, and will catch up with everyone when I get back.

Where were we?

Ahhh yes.... Taming Your Gremlin.  That thing that beats you down.

Gremlin

Last week we were discussing your Gremlin.  I asked you what it was holding you back from doing the things you wanted to do.  I then asked you what was that voice inside your head that stopped you from doing what it is you hope to achieve.  I called it your Gremlin just as Rick Carson did in his book Taming Your Gremlin.

Today's assignment is a two day assignment.  You will need a small notepad or piece of paper that you can carry with you and keep handy.  The assignment goes as follows, each time that Gremlin says something to you that is negative or degrading or stops you from doing something you want to do, write it down.  If your Gremlin says the same thing over and over again, then put a slash or check mark next to the sentence you already wrote.

For instance my Gremlin says:  "So your fat.  You're having a good time!  Come on, enjoy yourself, life is short.  You know you REALLY want that cheese burger and french fries.  Your ugly too!  Remember all the names everyone used to call you when you were little!  You mom didn't have much use for you either.  You are a mistake! You shouldn't be here ruining her life let alone everyone else's."  This is a diatribe that goes on almost indefinitely.  I share this with you because I have tamed it.  I am no longer in its grips.  You can too!  The first step is acknowledging it and noticing its voice.

So for the next two days... Write down everything your Gremlin says to you!

I Stand Corrected!

Ok, I didn't tag anyone.... so here goes.  (I'm not a good rule follwer, I was supposed to tag 5 people)

Krissy

Val

Vish (I want to know more about you!)

Amy

Joanne

Answer the questions below then tag 5 people, but my rule is you can't tag someone who has already been tagged!

I got tagged!

It has been a while since I have written anything about me, and I have been tagged by Alice over at Walking through this life, so I must oblige.

What was I doing ten years ago:

I was a stay at home mom by day.  In the evening I was a Partylite Consultant.  I also worked as a dancer/motivator with a couple of DJ companies.

What are five things on my list of things to do today.

1. Finish drinking my tea and this meme.
2. Make some phone calls.
3. Make myself a shake.
4. Write some e-mails
5. Staple 600 booklets

Snacks I enjoy

Snacks are a decadent treat that I do not normally eat, ahhh but when I do I love homemade guacamole and lime flavored tortilla chips.  Wise potato chips and Puffy Cheetos.

Bad Habits

I tend to be very messy.  I try not to be, but I am and I annoy even myself!

What would I do if I were a Billionaire.

Set myself up financially so that I wouldn't have to worry about money.  Then spend the rest helping others learn to help themselves.  I would travel all over and go on speaking tours.  I would like to spend time in various areas developing centers that help people learn to care for their body, mind and soul. (I have plans for this even if I don't become a billionaire!)

Five Places I have lived

1. Brooklyn NY
2. Long Island NY  (believe it or not these are like two different worlds!)
3. West Palm Beach FL
4. Ben Salem PA
5. Visited tons of other places but did not live anywhere else

Five Jobs I have had

1. Merry Go Round operator.  (this was my favorite job!  I got to sit in the center while the whole world revolved around me!)
2. Bartender
3. Model
4. Silver Polisher
5. Asst. Manager at a Needlepoint Store on Worth Ave. in Palm Beach

I can't stop there, I have done some really cool stuff

1. Airline reservation agent
2. Burger King
3. Receptionist at a Satellite Company
4. Avis car rental agent
5. Table side chef.

Getting Married?

HOW TO STOP PEOPLE FROM BUGGING YOU ABOUT GETTING MARRIED

Old aunts used to come up to me at weddings, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, "You're next." They stopped after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

A Dream Pang

A Dream Pang

by Robert Frost.

I had withdrawn in forest, and my song
Was swallowed up in leaves that blew alway;
And to the forest edge you came one day
(This was my dream) and looked and pondered long,
But did not enter, though the wish was strong:
you shook your pensive head as who should say,
'I dare not -- too far in his footsteps stray --
He must seek me would he undo the wrong.'

Not far, but near, I stood and saw it all
behind low boughs the trees let down outside;
And the sweet pang it cost me not to call
And tell you that I saw does still abide.
But 'tis not true that thus I dwelt aloof,
For the wood wakes, and you are here for proof

Liar!

Liar!

(I know somewhere in there you believe in yourself, your Gremlin is just not letting you do so!)

(A personal note to anyone who listed fear of failure; this exercise will work well to overcome that.)

So now you have your "reason" for why you don't believe in yourself.  Is there any truth to it?  I am guessing not.  If perhaps there is, maybe there is where you need to begin your work to help you believe in yourself.  But, I am still going to go with my first guess your a liar and it is your Gremlin that won't let you believe in yourself.

Your Gremlin is that voice in your head that keeps telling you that you can't do something, or you are not worthy, or that you do not deserve what it is you are reaching for.  It lets you have just a bit of success to keep you coming back for more punishment.  Just as you begin to dream or believe you may succeedk, a problem or two comes up and your Gremlin says something like... see, I told you so, you can't do it.  Or, ha ha, you can't do it.  Or, told you that you weren't going to follow through, or a multitude of other things.

Today's challenge is to answer this... What exactly does your Gremlin say to you and how often does it offer input.

You Suck!

Ok did I get your attention?  Now, I know you don't suck, but do YOU know you don't suck?

Last week I got more then a few comments and e-mails saying that it was difficult for you to believe in yourself.  I can understand that completely.  However, even the slightest part of you got offended by the title of today's entry, then the possibility exists that you CAN and most likely DO believe in yourself.

This weeks journal is going to be an IN YOUR FACE challenge.

Last week I talked about resolutions and goal setting.  I explained that one of the most important things that one needed to succeed was the ability to believe in yourself.  There were more then a few that said this was the most difficult part of the project.  Sometimes one finds it difficult, if not impossible, to believe in oneself.  There are many reasons for this, maybe you don't feel worthy because you were told you weren't growing up, or maybe you were told it was a form of bragging, or perhaps you just don't believe you are allowed to believe in yourself.  This week I am going to offer you a few questions for you to think about.

On Thursday, I am going to lay down a challenge at Magic Smoke that will involve the work you do here this week.

Today's question is:  What is preventing you from believing in yourself?  Feel free to leave a comment, or e-mail me. However if it is too personal, keep it in a private journal somewhere, or just close to your heart, but be able to answer the question.  It will help you as we go along.

Exciting News!

I have an exciting an.... Some of you may already know.

Vish at Magic Smoke asked me to do an entry on Thursdays over at Magic Smoke.  I'm very excited and I have a surprise or two up my sleeve

Next... For those of you familiar with the Nice Matters award and my idea of taking it to the world... well I am still working on that!  I did not forget!  My main challenge was finding out who originated it and Krissy at Sometime's I Think was a big help with that.  So when I found Corey at Tongue and Cheek, I was very happy and I talked to her about it.  I didn't want to use her idea without permission.  She agreed with me that the biggest challenge was going to find a gender neutral picture to go with the award.  That was the next challenge.  I have an idea and I am working on it.  I hope to be able to get it put together by May.  My next few weeks are going to be very busy so I have to wait till I can give it my full attention.

Last:  I found this quiz over at Guido's Northern Exposure.  I'm a horse!  The snake came in 2nd.  (hmmmmm Wonder what the characteristics of a snake are.)  I then did it again with the same answers and the 2nd time I came out a cat!  They should really be consistent LOL.

Anal Optic Nerve

Medical news

Bet you didn't know this:

Did you know that in the human body there is a nerve that connects
the eyeball to the anus?

It's called the Anal Optic Nerve, and it is responsible for giving

people a shitty outlook on life.

If you don't believe it, pull a hair from your ass and see if it

doesn't bring a tear to your eye.

The Road Not Taken

two_roads.jpg Robert Frost image by Angelofdrkness13

The Road Not Taken

Poem lyrics of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Create Support!

Transcript of this video below:

Once you have a good solid basis and have your success system set up it is time to create.  In  case you are joining me today the success system is 1. Having a clear vision of your goals  2. Set up S.M.A.R.T. goals.  That is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely and 3. Believe.  You can check out the last three days for more information if you are behind.

Now... Once your Success System is in place you should consider creating a support system.

One of the most important parts of your support system is having at least one person who will hold you accountable when you are failing to meet your goals, or who will encourage and inspire you when you are feeling down.  This person needs to be someone you trust and who feels comfortable being brutally honest and you have to be ready to accept their honesty.   Picking who you choose to be this person is very important.  If you are easily offended you may not want to pick your spouse.

For instance is we are sticking with the weight loss model you do not want to encounter this:

You:  Honey, does these jeans make my ass look fat?
Your spouse:  No, ass make ass look fat!

Then you will have to refer to some relationship coaching ideas.

The next support system that will help you achieve your goals is creating an environment that will support you and your goals.  I think most people know this entails choosing proper foods, taking away temptations and avoiding situations that will cause you to be tempted.  Let's say your goal is something different.  The same rules apply:

1. Rid yourself of all temptation.  Yes ALL temptation.  Realistically you will eventually have to allow that which tempts you back into your life, but you will want to wait until you have past your need or overcome your bad habit.

2. Create rules for yourself that you can live by and stick to them.

3. Reward yourself for good behavior or success.  Now if you are an alcoholic trying to over come a drinking habit, downing a fifth of vodka wouldn't be your reward of choice, however, it is important for you to find something that is equally rewarding.

4. Avoid people, places or things that cause you to be drawn away from your goal.

If you have any problem with any of the above, talk to your support person and journal about it.

Now you the tools you need to create the change you desire.  Next week we will talk about believing in yourself.

Step Three: BELIEVE!

Transcript of this video below

Step Three, in my humble opinion, is the most important.  You must truly believe that you will be successful.  In order for this to happen you must have a very clear vision of what it is you want to achieve.

A good way to prepare your self is by meditation or prayer. This is important to do each and every day as much as possible.  It doesn't have to be big and elaborate or even ritualistic, however if you have the time to do so it will offer you a wonderful respite from the daily grind.  In a later blog I will offer some varied suggestions on how to do a more ritualistic prayer or meditation, but for now lets keep it simple.

Praying or meditating throughout the day is as simple as turning of the radio while you are driving, or the TV while you are cleaning, or perhaps going for your walk or job without your music and head set (unless music helps you focus).  Use this time to ask for what you want and to give thanks for what you have been given.  Do it as often as humanly possible.  Include the divine in your daily activities.

Visualize.  This here is the key.  Remember when you were a kid and you wanted that special something for your birthday.  You would ask and ask and ask again and again.  You would draw pictures of it.  You cut out pictures of it and put it where you could see it and where you parents could see it.  You would talk about it with your friends and you used to imagine holding it and using it.  In your mind, you already had it.  You believed with all your heart you were going to have it, and most likely you did.  This is the childlike heart and mind we must have to manifest that which we desire.

Scientific studies support this as well.  A study was done on Olympic runners in which they were asked to sit in a recliner and run their race entirely in their mind.  Electrodes were applies that let the researches see how their muscles were reacting.  They then ran the race with the electrodes attached and the results were amazing.  The same muscles reacted in the same way weather they were sitting in the chair or running the race.  The mind does not know the difference between what it perceives is real and what our body is experiencing.  In the minds eye what it is experiencing is real and out body will react accordingly.

Therefore, staying with the weight loss model, the more you see yourself as having already achieved your goal weight, the closer you will be to getting there.  See and feel yourself in you thin jeans or your favorite dress or bathing suit.  Again I will go into more detail in a later blog about suggestions on how to improve this, but I think you have the idea for now.

It also doesn't hurt to place motivational reminders everywhere!  Cut out pictures of what you want and put them where you can see them.  Tell people what you are working towards, but do it with conviction; there is no room for failure.  Act as if you already have it!  If you believe it is already yours then act like.

You can achieve your goal!

That's all for today.  Tomorrow we will cover step four.

Make S.M.A.R.T. Goals

This is the 3rd time I am trying this post.

I decided to do another video blog, however for those of you who have a slow connection or are hearing impaired I have provided a transcript.

Why is the video done in my car?

1. It is my mobile office.  2.  I thought the acoustics would be better.  3.  It is easier to control  interruptions.  4.  I had the time there.

Why am I video blogging?

1,  I am able to critique myself.  2. Others are able to critique me.  3.  Some folks hate to read, but love to relax and listen.

For those of you who want to know how to do a YouTube video my "How I Did It" is below.

Transcript:

If you tried yesterdays suggestion you now have a fairly clear vision of what you  want to accomplish.  It is not time to break it down and create S.M.A.R.T. goals.

That is goals must be

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Timely

This will assure that you will have the greatest possibility of attaining success.

Since many of you commented that you wanted to loose weight, I will use that as an example on how to create S.M.A.R.T. goals.  These techniques will apply to any goal you wish to accomplish.

First: Be Specific.  How much weight do you want to loose.  Put a number on it!

Second: Make it Measurable.  With loosing weight, this one is easy.  You have a scale.  Get on it at a pre-determined day each week.

Third:  Make certain it is attainable.  If you want to loose more then 10 pounds, you will want to break down the amount into smaller increments.

Fourth:  Make it Realistic.  There are a ton of "diets" out there that claim that they can help you loose 10lbs in one week.  While this may be possible, it isn't realistic.  You may bring about the weight loss you want however it will not bring about the change you want.  You want to loose the weight and keep it off.  This requires an entire life change.

Fifth:  Make it timely.  Put dates on the pound.  Do you want to loose five pounds? Set a goal date.  If today is April 1, 2008 then set a goal for two weeks time.  Commit to loosing the wight by April 15th.

Ok, now you have your goal and you are very specific on what it is and when you want to accomplish it by.  To further complete your S.M.A.R.T. goals write down what you are going to do to achieve them.

Journaling helps a great deal in accomplish our goals.  When we write each day about what it is we are working for, where we succeed and where it is we had the most difficulties, then we have something concrete to encourage us and to learn from.

Things to consider and commit to that will support your S.M.A.R.T. goals are:

How much water are you going to commit to drinking each day?
How many calories are you going to eat each day?
How are you going to exercise and how often?
Who are you going to choose to hold you accountable?

Write these goals down and measure them daily.  Keep track of what you eat, when, where and what your mood was.  Keep a log of your exercise and make sure you have measurable improvement each week.

If you are using a diet plan, make certain that it doesn't consider it a "diet".  Weight loss plans such as Dr. Phil's, Body For Life, Weight Watchers are excellent because they teach you how to eat, not diet.  Always check with your Doctor before beginning any new dietary plan.

Tomorrow we will discuss step three.

HOW I DID IT.

How to do a YouTube Video:

1. I have a regular Kodak camera that has a video setting.  I put the camera on a tripod.  Positioned camera and hit the timer.

2.  Shot the video.

3. Uploaded it to my computer

4. Edited it taking of the exciting part at the end where you get to see the sky, the car door and my shoes.

6. Went to my YouTube account (its free) and uploaded it.  Make certain that they have the correct format WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG.  This can take a while.  This video took about 15 min to upload.

7. Then wait.  You have to wait a bit while the video is processed through YouTube, but once it is done you can embed it in your journal just like any other video.
